Innsbruck’s “Christmas in the Mountains”

Tradition and modernity, mountain experience and urban diversity; this is what attracts visitors to the Alpine city with heart! Innsbruck impresses again this year with 180 festive stalls at its Christmas markets and an atmospheric variety guaranteed to enthral right around the city from 15th November 2011 until 6th January 2012.

Christmas Market in Innsbruck’s Old Town – the Traditional Market

Each year during Advent, a traditional Christmas market takes place in the heart of the historic old town of Innsbruck, right in front of the Golden Roof and surrounded by beautifully preserved medieval facades. Here locals and visitors from all over the world come together to enjoy the wonderful Christmas atmosphere. On a stroll through the market, with over 70 stalls, you will find Christmas tree decorations, arts and crafts and a few curiosities. Meet new friends, warm up and refuel with some traditional delicacies and a mug of Glühwein (mulled wine).

Christmas Market at Marktplatz – the Family Market

Right by the River Inn you will find the third biggest Christmas market in Innsbruck. Marktplatz square is an experience for the whole family. The giant carousel, petting zoo, puppet theatre, story time and much more will make your children’s eyes sparkle. There will also be a living nativity scene this year for the first time. The 60 Christmassy market stalls offering wonderful gift ideas and tasty treats form the heart of this popular family market.

Christmas Market in Maria-Theresien-Straße – the Modern Market

Innsbruck’s main shopping street will once again dazzle visitors with lights, glass and crystal and offer a range of international Christmas products. 30 stalls, modern Christmas lighting designs and an avenue of sparkling trees, not forgetting the enormous mountain crystal, dominate the scene in the heart of the city alongside numerous shops in the festively decorated shopping street. It’s clear to see the world comes to Innsbruck! Also open after New Year’s Eve until 6th January 2012.

Hungerburg Christmas Market – the Panoramic Market

On the new Hungerburgbahn funicular, getting to the “highest” Christmas Market is an experience in itself. Once at the top, not only are you guaranteed breathtaking views of Innsbruck, the small-but-special market also offers an array of culinary delights and a wide range of Christmas souvenirs. From here you can also hop aboard the newly installed panoramic cable car and continue on up to the Seegrube and even further up to the Hafelekar at 2,256m. Mountains have never been so close!
